British Services Makalu Expedition 2008

The British Services will mount a challenging Expedition to the Nepalese Himalaya between March and June 2008.

Four teams have separate objectives: a team will attempt the traditional North East Ridge of Makalu (8463m), the World’s 5th highest mountain; a second team will simultaneously attempt the notorious South East Ridge of Makalu, which resisted an attempt by a British Services’ Team in 2004. They will descend by the North East Ridge thus completing the first ever traverse of the Mountain. A development team of up and coming mountaineers will attempt to make the first British ascent of Pethangtse at 6739m before crossing into the Khumbu Valley and climbing Island Peak. Finally, a Junior Team of young Servicemen and women will climb Mera Peak at 6400m.

All four teams will follow the same approach route from Tumlingtar, crossing the Shipton La and continuing up the Barun Valley. On this site you will be able to meet the teams, look at their objectives, their equipment and follow their progress on the daily blogs, which will begin towards the end of March.

The Expedition is Under the Patronage of His Grace, the Duke of Westminster KG OBE TD DL
